Yang Yanping

b. 1934

Born in Nanjin in 1934, Yang Yanping was one of the leading artists of her generation and has since gained international recognition as one of the finest contemporary ink painters from China. Never succumbing to the "transgressive" effusions of current chic academic theory, she has maintained ideals of high visual quality and artistic autonomy, allowing her to embrace modernity while still holding on to the lessons of the past. Her works explore the meaning of freedom as a subject for reflection and often return to the theme of the lotus flower, a sustaining source of inspiration for Yang over many years. Yang Yanping's works are in major collections in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
