
Chinese Eyes: Contemporary Photography from ChinaXing Danwen was born in 1967 in Xi'an. As a photographer, Xing Danwen has shifted between the roles of photojournalist and artist. She shot her first rolls of film at Tiananmen Square, during the historic demonstration in 1989 and then documented the performance art movement among the East Village artists in the early 1990's. She has been widely exhibited internationally at such exhibitions as the Beijing-Revolutionary Capital at the ICA in London in 1999, China Fest in Berlin in 2001, The American Effect at the Whitney in New York in 2003, and Alors la China at the Pompidou in Paris in 2003.
