On the Edge of the MillenniumQiu Deshu was born in 1948 in Shanghai and gained recognition in the early 1980s as a founder of the Grasses (Caocao), one of China's first experimental art societies in the post-Mao period. For more than twenty years, Qiu Deshu has steered a steady course between ink painting—exploring ways to work that is relevant to the modern world with traditional techniques—and brash experiments of the avant-garde. Much of his work has been acquired by the Asian Museum of Seoul in Korea, but he is also represented in the Shanghai Art Museum, the Linden Museum in Stuttgart, the Olenska Foundation in Geneva, and the Art Museum in Taichung, Taiwan, among others.
