Miao Xiaochun 缪晓春

b. 1964

Miao Xiaochun, born in 1964 in Jiangsu Province, is recognized as one of the most dynamic photographers from China today. Miao Xiaochun fuses numerous digital photos to create highly detailed mural-sized photographs of cityscapes and landscapes. While using modern technology to create these complex works, he seeks to bring attention to the overt commercialization of Chinese society, often placing a scholarly figure in his urban pictorials as a reminder of past reverence for intellectuals. To further emphasize his respect for traditional art, Miao Xiaochun presents his works in the format favored by Chinese literati painters whose narrative scrolls—both vertical and horizontal—contained multiple points of focus and offered a moving narrative. Miao Xiaochun has exhibited widely, most notably at the Left Hand-Right Hand Exhibition at the 798 Art Space in Beijing in 2003 and with Rivka Rinn at White Space Beijing in 2004.
