Liu Wei

b. 1972

Born in Beijing in 1972, Liu Wei graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts in 1996 and currently works and lives in Beijing. He creates surreal composite photographs that comment on the ways industry, construction, and modern materials combine to change the urban landscape in China. Ever the versatile artist, Liu Wei also paints monumental oil canvases with photographic precision and clarity. He gained international attention shortly after graduation at the 'Beijing in London' exhibition at the Institution of Contemporary Art in London in 1999. His recent exhibitions include the 51st Venice Biennale, the second Guangzhou Triennial, the Mahjong exhibition in Bern, Switzerland in 2005, and the exhibition of the Estella Collection at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
