
Works on PaperBorn in Fujian Province in 1954, Huang Yong Ping first gained fame in the 1980s when he formed the Dada-inspired group "Xiamen Dada." An artist that enjoys pushing boundaries and destabilizing the status quo, he is known for his conceptual work, such as the installation "'A History of Chinese Painting' and 'A Concise History of Modern Painting Washed in a Washing Machine for Two Minutes". His most recent well-known work is "Bat Project I–III," an installation piece that reproduces part of the US spy plane, which made an emergency landing in Hainan in 2004 and which the Chinese government subsequently dismantled. Having moved to Paris, France in 1989, Huang has been active in the international scene with a number of solo exhibitions, and he has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including the 1998-99 American exhibition Inside Out: New Chinese Art, and the 1999 Venice Biennale.
