Chun-yi Lee 李君毅

b. 1965

Born in Taiwan in 1965, Chun-yi Lee moved to Hong Kong in 1970, and graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he was deeply influenced by his teacher Liu Kuo-sung, and became dedicated to a career in art. He obtained his M.F.A. from the Graduate School of Fine Arts of Tunghai University in Taiwan, and is a PhD candidate in Chinese art history at the Arizona State University. Chun-yi Lee is clearly aware of his hybrid and trans-cultural experience, both in his art-critical outlook and in his art. Inspired by the ancient Chinese ink-rubbing technique, Lee uses a small cork block to stamp on the paper with alternating pressure and in different directions, which creates seemingly traditional yet deconstructed landscapes.
